Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Supervisor

  • Supervises the assigned staff who have the overall responsibility of cleaning, decontaminating and sterilizing surgical instruments, non-surgical instrumentation, patient care equipment and products used thoughout CH, in accordance with the departmental policies and procedures, guidelines established by JCAHO, state and federal regulations, and AAMI standards.
  • Supervises the overall process of maintaining the operating room case cart system, including stocking, issuing and picking of supplies, as well as assembling and delivering the prepared cart with the required instrumentation to the central holding area as defined. Identifies, measures, plans and acts to resolve workflow problems and enhance processes through performance improvement.
  • Surveys, samples and exercises discretion and judgment when evaluating the work process of employees and systems to ensure quality of practice. Initiates in-services for new products, new procedures and current techniques and products. Keeps staff informed of changes to current practices within the industry.
  • Establishes appropriate levels for inventory transfer and direct purchases that are used for the case cart system. Utilizes established programs within MMIS (service provided at the Mercer Campus only).
  • Consults with, advises and assists all CH staff and departments with supply, equipment and sterilization information and guidelines. Monitors those departments that performed their own sterilization and decontamination.
  • Uses par levels to replenish supplies and equipment needed within the department to perform the daily operations. Uses par levels to maintain control of inventory items located in department. Utilizes established programs within the MMIS to create reorder notices for inventory items. Works closely with staff and the Materials Management Information Supervisor to coordinate, perform and validate the physical inventories performed throughout the year.
  • Participates with the Director of Materials Management, when required, in the development of the departmental operational budget, monitoring of the operational budget, or the development of special project budgets. Works with staff to ensure that expense allocation is completed before month's end.
  • Places and oversees order placement for specialty items needed for the care and treatment of patients located on nursing units and nursing floors. Oversees department and patient care equipment to ensure that it is maintained and periodically inspected by qualified service technicians to ensure safety and proper use.
  • Initiates MMIS-related standard or custom paperwork to keep database accurate. Monitors and tracks input of patient charges for supplies and equipment rentals that directly affect SPD and CSR charge items. Documents, addresses and resolves incorrect charges posted to department account by other areas in a timely manner when required and seeks assistance from IS Department and Patient Accounts Department.

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three years of central sterile or sterile processing experience.
  • CRCST or certified through national sterile processing program recognized by New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
  • Management-certified (CHL or CSPM).
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, conflict-resolution and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to respond quickly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of inventory and purchasing functions helpful.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Strong background of surgical instrumentation knowledge, patient care equipment experience and supply control knowledge (SSS).
  • Successful completion of approved NJDOHSS central service course with a certificate in both management and processing.
